Happy, Healthy Well Bred Companions for Pet, Show & Performance Homes

Thank you for visiting!  We are glad you found us.  We are a small hobby show breeder located in Grande Prairie, Alberta with an emphasis on breeding healthy and well-tempered puppies.  Our goal is to occasionally produce top quality Havanese to be devoted family pets and show dogs.  Our dogs are part of our family living in our home and participating in daily activities.  They are affectionate companions that love to snuggle, play, and perform.  Each dog has their very own sweet temperament and funny personality.  You can read about each dog on the Meet Our Dogs page.

Havanese are known for their exuberant love and affection towards their families.  If you are looking for a dog who will bring you smiles, great joy and companionship every moment of the day this breed might be the one for you.  They are hypo-allergenic for most allergy sufferers and have a low to non-shedding coat.  Depending on whether your dog is kept in a puppy cut or long hair will determine the amount of minimal hair that sheds.  Regular bathing and brushing helps to keep their coats in great condition.  Havanese excel at agility, obedience, tricks and other sports.  They want nothing more than to please their people.  Havanese are also known as a velcro dog which means some of them can experience separation anxiety.  The most important thing is to start them off on the right track by teaching them it is ok to be alone for short periods of time.  Overall, the Havanese is a wonderful family pet that will provide never-ending affection and entertainment.  Quite often one isn't enough!

Each litter will be carefully planned to continue to preserve the breed with temperament, health and structure being the priority.  Puppies will not be produced often so it is of utmost importance to make each breeding the best possible.
We do not breed for color or smaller than standard.

All puppies are priced the same with the exception of those being sold to carefully selected show homes.

Our Havanese have been very carefully chosen after extensive research.  We are proud to have dogs from heavily championed lines but even more importantly than conformation titles are the records of generations of health testing available on the OFA website.  Not only does it help us to make the best decisions in what we produce, it also gives families the extra knowledge they need to choose a healthy lifelong companion that conforms to the breed standard in temperament and structure.

Our intent is to conform to the guidelines of the CKC breed standards for structure, movement and coat
without sacrificing health or temperament.

At the appropriate ages we test for hip and elbow dysplasia, patella luxation, Legg Calve Perthes Disease, hearing (BAER), and heart.  Yearly eye exams are done by board certified specialists.   All results will be registered and available for viewing on the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals website.

There is never a full guarantee that a dog will not inherit or develop any issues.  Rest assured, we are doing our very best here at Chickadee Havanese and we back all our puppies with a 3 year genetic health guarantee to cover every puppy that we produce.

Meet the Breeder

Picture
Hi, My name is Gabrielle and here is a little bit about me.  I live in Northern Alberta with my bestfriend and husband of 24 years.  He's my helper and the best guy for this gal.

My journey into the Havanese breed started after I had inherited my late mother's small dog.  We had an odd relationship and I thought for sure it was an attitude that would be shared amongst all smaller breeds.  I had only owned larger breeds up to that point.  After sometime I had this tug on my heart for another smaller dog and the Havanese fascinated me.  We had already owned a Golden Retriever at the time and it seemed to be a perfect match.  That was in 2007 and I will say my knowledge of well bred purebreds was next to nothing.  I didn't even know where to start with research online to find breeders.  We ended up meeting in the middle with price and found a very sweet Havanese cross.  She is still with us and reminds me daily of why I fell in love with the breed.  She certainly took after the Havanese traits.

I had a desire to breed and share some puppy love with amazing families so I started a very small breeding program and moved forward.  After a while and as I continued to learn so much more about the breed, health, and structure I jumped in with both feet and made the decision to start over.  I bought my first show puppy in 2013 and the rest is history.  Since then I have had many ups and downs but sometimes my stubbornness comes in handy and I just keep pushing through.  Since then I have (some with handlers) finished 6 Havanese to their CKC Conformation Championships.

I made a promise to myself, my puppy families and the breed that I would do everything I could to better the Havanese in all aspects.  I love to show my dogs and maybe one day I'll enter into more performance sports.  I also do more health testing than required which means I spend a lot of time travelling south to Edmonton and sometimes Calgary.  I love to research pedigrees inside and out to have as much knowledge about my own dogs and any breedings that I do.

There are breeders whom I owe all gratitude to for giving me a chance.  Without them I wouldn't have the healthy
beautiful dogs I do!

I am a member of The Canadian Kennel Club and our National Breed Club.

If you believe a puppy from us will suit your needs and desires for your next companion we would love to hear from you.

In Loving Memory of my mom who has joined the angels in heaven far too soon.
Forever loved, forever missed and until we meet again I take comfort in knowing where she is.
The Chickadee was her favorite little bird.
